Trial Run Status
Diamond Corridor - First Trial Run
The first trial run launched on 29 March 2026 on the 8.5 km elevated section from Dream City to Althan Tenement on the Red Line. This stretch is called the "Diamond Corridor" because it connects directly to the Surat Diamond Bourse, the world's largest diamond trading hub. Seven stations were completed at the time of the trial.
- Date
- 29 March 2026
- Section
- Dream City to Althan Tenement
- Distance
- 8.5 km
- Testing scope
- 500+ hours planned
Testing covers safety mechanisms, braking, speed performance, and security protocols. RDSO and CMRS independent inspections are required before the section opens for commercial passengers. The east-west corridor (Green Line) has also begun trial runs.
Underground Tunneling Progress
All 6.47 km of underground tunneling on Corridor 1 is complete. Three tunnel boring machines (TBMs) excavated twin tunnels between Kapodra and Gandhi Baug, passing through 6 underground stations in the old city centre.
TBM Amrit
Achieved breakthrough at Chowk Bazar Station in August 2025. Named after the "Amrit Mahotsav" celebration of India's 75th independence anniversary.
Breakthrough complete
TBM Narmada
Named after Gujarat's Narmada River. Excavated through the dense urban core beneath Surat's historic textile market district, one of the most challenging stretches.
Breakthrough complete
TBM Tapi
Named after the Tapi River that flows through Surat. Completed the final underground tunnel segment, enabling full connectivity through the 6 underground stations from Labheshwar Chowk to Chowk Bazar.
Breakthrough complete
Underground stations (6)
Stretch: Kapodra to Gandhi Baug, 6.47 km. All underground stations are on Corridor 1 (Red Line) only.

Construction and Project Questions
When did Surat Metro construction start?
PM Modi laid the foundation stone on 18 January 2021, and civil construction began immediately after. The project was sanctioned by the Union government on 11 March 2019 following DPR approval by the Public Investment Board two days earlier.
How much does the Surat Metro project cost?
The total sanctioned cost is Rs 12,020.32 crore (approximately US$1.2 billion). Funding comes from central and state government equity (50:50 split), an AFD loan of EUR 250 million, and a KfW loan of EUR 442.26 million, with the remainder from additional multilateral sources.
Which section of Surat Metro had the first trial run?
The first trial run started on 29 March 2026 on the 8.5 km "Diamond Corridor" section between Dream City and Althan Tenement on the Red Line. This elevated section connects to the Surat Diamond Bourse and had 7 stations completed at the time of the trial.
How many tunnel boring machines were used for the underground section?
Three TBMs were deployed for the 6.47 km underground stretch on Corridor 1: Amrit, Narmada, and Tapi. TBM Amrit achieved its breakthrough at Chowk Bazar Station in August 2025, marking a major tunneling milestone for the project.
Who is building the Surat Metro coaches?
Titagarh Rail Systems won the Rs 857 crore order in June 2023 to manufacture metro coaches for both corridors. The trains run on standard gauge (1,435 mm) track with 750V DC third rail electrification and have a design speed of 80 km/h.
What is the current status of Surat Metro construction?
Trial runs began on 29 March 2026 on the 8.5 km Dream City to Althan Tenement section. Underground tunneling across all three TBMs is complete. The first commercial section is expected to open by mid-2026 after RDSO and CMRS inspections.
